How to find the Best Beach in Menorca
And why you should never let the rain disrupt your plans...
Forget images of crisp white sand, deckchairs, and a bar selling ice-cold mojitos (although i'm not saying I'm impartial to a icy cold cocktail) Cala del Pilar is unlike any other beach in Menorca. With the reddest sand, the clearest water in Europe, and completely secluded, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t make the effort to come to this little cove on the north coast of the island.
Those of you who know this beach will also know that it's a 40minute walk from where you park the car. This might sound like too much of a hike in the 30 degree heat but the surrounding scenery is enough to distract you from the walk itself, meaning you can focus on the amazing landscape you find yourself surrounded by.
There is no doubt that this might turn some people off from coming here, which you can see just because the beach is far less crowded than any other on the island. Compared to the beach at Cala Galdana, this one feels like it’s on another planet. The moment you come over the top of the small hill that shelters the beach from any southern winds, the red sand is laid out before you like a red carpet at the Oscars.
When we arrived at the beach it had just started to rain, and rather than try to find some shelter in the trees we ran straight into the water. We were going to get wet anyway, why bother staying dry? The best thing about the rain was that everyone who was on the beach at the time quickly packed up their things and ran back towards their cars. Being English, we were more than used to the rain and we were determined to make the most of our time here. (Although the thunder was slightly unnerving we must say, but we live to tell the tail)
Once the rain had finished and we couldn’t get any wetter, we got out of the water and dried off in the sun. It seemed like it was too good to be true. For a while it felt like we were the last people on earth, but as the afternoon went on, a few more people turned up to enjoy the last bit of sunshine of the day on the best beach we found in Menorca.
We highly recommend you try to visit this beach if you’re planning a trip to Menorca. We hired a car for one day and tried to explore as much of the island as we could. This made the journey to Cala del Pilar much easier as we realised beforehand that there was no bus service to this part of the island and we were desperate not to miss out.
Have you visited this beach? We’d love to hear about your experience!
